Bayterek Tower is an iconic monument and observation tower that stands at the heart of Astana, symbolizing the aspirations and future of Kazakhstan. Completed in 2002, the tower was designed by the architect Norman Foster.

Key Features:Design and Symbolism: The tower's design is symbolic, representing a Kazakh folktale about a mythical tree of life and a magical bird named Samruk. The tower is often interpreted as a symbol of the nation's progress and the unity of its past and future.

Height: Bayterek Tower is approximately 97 meters (318 feet) tall, and its structure includes a golden sphere at the top, symbolizing the sun, with a viewing platform inside.

Observation Deck: Visitors can take an elevator to the top of the tower to reach the observation deck, which provides panoramic views of Astana and its surroundings. The cityscape includes modern architecture, the Ishim River, and the Presidential Palace.

Handprint of the President: At the top of the tower, there is an imprint of the hand of Nursultan Nazarbayev, the first President of Kazakhstan, who placed his handprint during the tower's inauguration.

Kazakh National Anthem: The tower is also known for playing the Kazakh national anthem at the top of every hour, adding a patriotic and symbolic touch to its presence.

Bayterek Tower has become an iconic symbol of Astana and Kazakhstan as a whole, attracting both tourists and locals. It represents the country's ambition, progress, and the vision for a prosperous future. The name "Bayterek" translates to "tall poplar tree" in Kazakh, further emphasizing the connection to the nation's folklore and cultural heritage.

Standing at 105 meters, Bayterek Tower is a prominent monument in Astana, Kazakhstan’s capital. Inaugurated in 2002, it symbolizes the nation’s post-independence aspirations and the city’s designation as the capital in 1997. The tower’s design reflects a Kazakh legend of the mythical bird Samruk laying its egg in the Tree of Life, representing harmony and renewal.

Observation Deck: Located at 97 meters, symbolizing the year 1997 when Astana became the capital

Design: A white lattice structure supporting a 22-meter diameter golden sphere, representing the “egg” from the legend

Materials: Constructed with steel and glass, weighing over 1,000 tons

Offers 360-degree panoramic views of Astana’s skyline, including landmarks like the Presidential Palace and the Ishim River.

Features the “Ayaly Alakan” (Caring Hands), a gilded handprint of President Nursultan Nazarbayev, where visitors can place their hand and make a wish.  

 

Exhibition Spaces:

The base houses an art gallery showcasing works by Kazakh artists and exhibits on the nation’s history and culture.
