🏔️ Medeu Skating Rink – A Legendary Ice Arena in the Mountains

Nestled at an altitude of 1,691 meters (5,548 feet) above sea level in the picturesque Medeu Valley near Almaty, Kazakhstan, the Medeu Skating Rink is celebrated as the world’s highest outdoor ice rink. Since its inauguration in 1951, Medeu has been a hub for winter sports enthusiasts and a symbol of Kazakhstan’s rich sporting heritage.


🕰️ A Glimpse into History

Inception: Construction began in 1949, and the rink officially opened on February 5, 1951.

Namesake: Named after Medeu Pusurmanov, a local entrepreneur who contributed to the development of the area in the early 20th century.

Record-Breaking Legacy: Known as the “factory of records,” Medeu has witnessed over 200 world records in speed skating, attributed to its unique climatic conditions and high-quality ice.  


⛸️ Features and Facilities

Ice Surface: Spanning 10,500 square meters, the rink offers ample space for various ice sports.

Artificial Freezing System: Implemented in 1972, this system ensures consistent ice quality, utilizing pure mountain water from the Malaya Almatinka River.

Seating Capacity: Accommodates up to 8,500 spectators, making it suitable for large-scale events.

Additional Amenities: Includes skate rentals, protective gear, changing rooms, cafes, and souvenir shops for visitor convenience.  


🌞 Year-Round Activities

While traditionally a winter destination, Medeu has expanded its offerings to include summer activities:

 

Indoor Ice Rink: Since 2022, a 450-square-meter indoor rink allows for summer skating sessions.

Roller Rink and Skate Park: The complex features a roller rink adorned with Central Asia’s largest horizontal graffiti and a skate park for enthusiasts.

Fitness Facilities: Visitors can access a gym and participate in various fitness activities during the warmer months.  


🚶‍♂️ The Health Ladder and Medeu Dam

Adjacent to the rink is the Medeu Dam, constructed in the late 1960s to protect Almaty from mudflows. Visitors can challenge themselves by climbing the 842-step “Health Ladder” to the dam’s summit, rewarded with panoramic views of the valley and city below.

Location: Medeu Valley, Almaty, Kazakhstan

Operating Hours: Daily sessions from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM, with technical breaks from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM and 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

Ticket Prices: Approximately 1,500 KZT for adults and 1,000 KZT for children per hour; children under 6 enter free.

Access: Easily reachable via Bus #12 from Dostyk Avenue in Almaty, departing every 30 minutes.
